We are especially pleased that a spin-off effect of this scheme is that more and more youngsters are taking up an extremely healthy activity in skating."
The scheme was originally conceived by Managing Director Mike Petrouis who understanding the importance of school attendance decide to build a local community initiative that encourages young people to work harder and as a reward keep fitter through a leisure pastime all families enjoy.
Mr Petrouis commented ‘Ice Skating is a family recreational pursuit that Planet Ice has always been keen to develop. Some areas of the country have quite low attendance at school and as a result some young people under achieve. It is very important for young people to be kept active and where they show the initiative – reward them. The great thing about the scheme is that each young person receiving the voucher gets the opportunity to redeem it with there family. Again Planet Ice feels it is important for families to recreate together and this scheme positively promotes that too’
Lorna Cotton, Manager of Planet Ice Isle of Wight Arena said: "If we as a company can offer an extra incentive for students to attend school then we are more than happy to assist our local council in doing so. There is no doubt that Dancing on Ice has increased the profile of skating and the number of people trying ice skating for the first time as well as those taking it up as a regular sporting activity."
The new initiative is currently piloting with the support of local government in 3 different districts and is likely to roll out to other districts over the forthcoming months.
